Waste-to-Energy Plant: The Incinerator That Concerns Everyone
A large waste-to-energy plant is planned for Santa Palomba, on the outskirts of Rome, raising major concerns about air quality, public health, and environmental impact.
While such plants reduce landfill waste by burning it and producing energy, they also release invisible pollutants into the air. Many fear this could increase the risk of respiratory diseases and cancer, especially as mixed and non-recyclable waste often contains harmful substances.
Opposition groups, including local committees and environmental associations, are calling for more recycling, stronger waste collection systems, and transparent studies before any construction begins. They stress that this project could lock the region into an outdated waste model, instead of promoting circular economy and sustainable practices.
In September, hundreds of residents marched in Santa Palomba with a clear message:
“Health is not for sale.”
